CHAPTER EIGHT

“YOU LEFT THIS in my vehicle.”

Wiping the sleep from her eyes, Jenny stared at the man standing on her front porch. Was she dreaming? She’d gone from seeing him with her eyes closed to waking from her doorbell ringing and finding him freshly showered, wearing jeans and a navy T-shirt, standing on her front porch.

“Tristan? What are you doing here?” That he held her hat in his hands registered. “You didn’t need to bring that to me. I mean, you could have brought it to work this evening. That would have been fine.”

“Bringing it by wasn’t a big deal and this way you don’t have to worry about keeping track of it at work.”

“Thank you.” She took the hat from him, saw her mother’s car pulling into the drive, and felt a moment of panic. Could she just make Tristan disappear so that her mother and Sawyer didn’t see him?

But even as she thought it, Tristan turned to see who she was looking at, and Jenny faced the inevitable. Sawyer and her mother were about to meet Tristan. The man she’d kissed and wanted to do so much more with. She hadn’t, though. She’d kissed him and walked away because he was no frog prince.

Sighing, Jenny brushed past him to help her mother.

“Hi, Mom,” she said as her mother’s car door opened. “How was your weekend?”

“I was just about to ask you the same.” Her mother motioned to where Tristan stood on the porch. “From the look of things, I’m guessing things went well.”

Was she implying that Tristan had stayed the night? Jenny gawked at her mother’s knowing look.

“I left my hat in Tristan’s vehicle this morning when he dropped me off.” There, she’d let her mother know that he hadn’t stayed the night. “He found it and was just dropping it by. He just got here.”

“Tristan. I’ve not heard you mention him. He’s who you went camping with?” her mother asked, obviously intrigued.

“I went with a whole group from work. Tristan just happened to be who Laura and I rode with to the Ocoee.” Her friend should have been with her on the way back home, but had bailed, choosing to ride with Roger and Lucia. “It’s not a big deal.” Hoping her mother didn’t see right through her and somehow know Jenny had kissed him, she opened Sawyer’s door. “Hey, you. Did you have a great weekend with Grammy in Gatlinburg?”

Grinning, Sawyer nodded as she undid his safety seat. “Eli and I slept under the shark tanks. You have to go do that, Mom. They were huge. You’d love it.”

Jenny smiled at her world. “Sounds as if you loved it. I sure missed you.”

His blond head bobbed up and down as he climbed out of the car. The moment his feet were on the ground, Jenny wrapped him in a hug.

“I see you have a new friend with you. Did Grammy get you that?”

“Grammy let me pick any stuffed animal I wanted. I started to get a shark.
